Boots Footwear Holder: Design Process #3

In this part of the series, we’ll finish the design process for the Footwear Holder for eventual tool pathing here on CNCKing.com.

The shelves are now in place, looking at the model, I think the cowboy boot looks too similar to the top of the woman’s boot so I’m going to cut it down the middle a bit more. I’ll also create a bottom base to this footwear holder as well, just to make the structure more stable. I don’t have a backing as this will go against the wall and these aren’t small things falling in the back – unlike the issue I thought I’d have with my kangaroo shelf.

I now made each outside part full so you don’t see the shelvings going through the boots but I left the top as-is since I want to make a little cubby hole and key holder coming off the edge. I see I screwed-up the second shelf from the top, the first one needs to be full-sized while the other remain small – that’s another area I’ll transform into a box for more little things.

Now that the top is fixed and better thought-out, I’m going to focus on the bottom. Like real shoes, originally I thought of adding a sole but that’s kinda hard now as the foot is raised off the ground so I’ll try to figure something out that looks good and adds more depth down below.

I’m going to work a bit more on the base and looking at the model, it seems a little flat due tot he boots, what I’m going to do is add another layer on the side to fix this and make it a little more interesting – this won’t add much if any strength so it’s purely cosmetic.

Adding the shelf on the cowboy boots is looking good, I built a shelf slightly higher going through the top boot for keys and small items but now that I think about it, it’s redundant so I’m going to remove it but I do find the model a bit boring so I’m going to make some inlays and windows.

I think that looks far better now with the windows on the side, I placed them strategically so you still hide the shelves, I’m going to do this on the other side, the taller boots, as well. I still don’t like the foot area though, I’m thinking of making them a drawer instead.

I like the extra depth I’ve created using this silhouette – what’s especially nice about this is that it just adds visually a lot more to the model that was there before. Now to fix-up the bottom somehow.

After a bit of going back and forth, I’m decided to make wooden shoe shelves that just slide into the base – so that means they can be used for shoes or other items of choice like gloves, hats etc.

What I’ve done is create a design feature that was troubling into a functional one that actually will be used. These drawers are HUGE – which is perfect for putting lots of things and they also fit great in the whole shoe holder. I’m happy with this design – let’s make the cutting files!
