Stegosaurus CNC: New Project Launch!

T-Boned Stegosaurus CNC

T-Boned Stegosaurus CNC

It’s funny, when I first started WoodMarvels.com over 3 years ago now, all the models were animated as if they were built out of plywood. I hadn’t discovered lasers that could cut through wood back then… so I then updated the model to a “laser cut” and now, thanks to ShopBot Tools… going back to the 3D plywood look!

Background

A few weeks ago now, I visited ShopBot Tools HQ and got myself a really great ShopBot Desktop – special thanks to Bill and Ted that made it all happen and for giving me a most Excellent Adventure! I then got some intense training by Angus (Hines Design Labs) on how to get comfortable using it and since then, have been learning how to cut and redesign some of my earlier models (Stegosaurus is my 36th design… I’m at almost 200 now btw) to be CNC’ed with as much ease as possible. My goal with this was to allow people with CNCs to bring the file in PartWorks and start cutting almost immediately (DXF requires a little more work as tool paths aren’t included). I think I’m there… I also wanted to get into CNC due to demand here at WoodMarvels.com so over the next few months, lots of CNC projects will be forthcoming.

You can now buy the Stegosaurus CNC at WoodMarvels.com under Collaborations / ShopBot Tools (CNC), as this borrows heavily from the laser cut version… I’ve included individual assembly instructions but the book has far more value in my opinion. As part of my streamlining process, you just download one zip file which contains both DXF (no tool paths or bones) and PartWorks (includes tool paths and bones) and you should be set to get cutting… once you get your hands on 6mm thick wood. The file is optimized for my own ShopBot Desktop (video below) so as you can see, I’ve borrowed heavily from the laser works by filling-up the sheet as much as possible… minimizing waste and maximizing fun.
