Medieval Castle Bank: Laser Cut & Hand Built

I designed the Medieval Castle Bank which you can find at CNCKing.com years ago while I was on a bit of a “bank” binge to make what I wished I had when I was a kid… I then updated the design to be cut with a CNC router. It’s really a cool design that’s so easy to put together!

I stuck a wrapped chunk of scrap plywood into the machine… have lots of odds and ends which are perfect for projects that are this “small”.

The model cut perfectly, this was cut out of 5 mm plywood. I scaled the model accordingly to make sure everything fit perfectly. Always measure thickness of material before cutting so you can scale it up right! I generally scale it a bit bigger just to make pieces easier to fit together.

Once I took away the sacrificial extra, all the pieces layed ahead of me waiting to be put together! The inside parts just dropped right out but it’s easier to grab big pieces first.

First step after removing the wrapping is to begin the sorting process and make sure I’m not missing any pieces, some of the smaller ones sometimes fall under the grid and I only discover this while building it… exactly the time I don’t want to be searching for a small pieces as the dry is gluing together!

There are some small pieces in here that are scrap (inside holes) but I kept them just incase, sometimes it’s nice to have small sticks to remove excess glue.

The model came together nicely, for some reason, with the colder weather here, the glue actually became white instead of transparent, which is what you see on the picture below. Doesn’t affect the model at all, it’s just as solid as ever, just looks “stained”.

I took a video of the whole process below, since acquiring my Trotec Speedy 400 flexx, I’ve learned that even scrap is useful for stuff, so it’s always good to keep it on hand for projects like this. You can buy this model right now at CNCKing.com under both sections (laser and router) in two different scales. The only difference with the router version is that I scaled it up slightly as I had to account for a round bit.
