Humming Bird Bench: New Plasma Cutting Project!
It has been quite a while since I launched something new here on CNCKing.com, starting a new physical business (CNCROi.com) has and continues to take-up the vast majority of my time! Things have changed a lot from a few years back when all I had was time to design and launch projects here! I hope to get back in the swing of things shortly but it’s been a wonderful experience starting-up a custom CNC shop which allows me to test a lot of the designs on this site as well… it’s a win/win especially long term.
This awesome looking humming bird bench really showcases the power of plasma when it comes to holding pieces together – I wish there was “wood” welding so I wouldn’t need any tabs! The finish is very nice, the build extremely strong along the weld joints and because of the way it’s designed, it can be easily scaled up or down.
There are a lot of ways to customize this project as well because of the low piece count – there aren’t any interlocking tabs and the flat panels can be modified in any 2D vector program to include just about any animal or object… even text if wanted!
The completed 6 piece model dimensions @ 4.8mm (3/16 inch) thick material are L: 1168 W: 583 H: 1104 (mm) or L: 46 W: 23 H: 44 (in). As there are no interlocks in the design, you can easily bump up the thickness or use a host of other materials… this can be done quite easily using acrylic or even wood with a few slight modifications!
You can find this project right now at CNCKing.com under CNC Plasma / It’s Alive in CRD, AI and EPS file formats so regardless of the program you use to design projects in, you have one format that will import perfectly.
I’ve had my eye on a plasma cutter for a while but at a recent tradeshow I got to experience the new 2.7 kw Mitsubishi EX Series and wow… that’s what I want! The price point it exponentially higher but this would be a fantastic project to cut on it! The way the sales guy was talking about it, he could have put Trotec instead of Mitsubishi as there are so many similarities in their approach to the industry.
