Home Gym Exerciser: Devolution
For as long as I can remember, I wanted to show how I designed the stuff you see on WoodMarvels.com. From taking screen shots to videos of the whole design process… nothing seemed to work for me. Although designing to me is fun, I’m sure to the outside observer, it’s a rather dull and illogical process – especially when you consider I do everything straight from my head without any sketches or plan (though I use to when I first started).
Here is my most memorable method of showing my design process – the video was sped-up but the results weren’t what I was looking to achieve.
Rather boring and the file sizes were huge (I believe 5gb of video was used to make the above video).
Design Screen shots
After the release of my last book, WoodMarvels.com Volume II – I began thinking of what I could do to make the next book even better. The progress between my first volume and second was astounding and I wanted an equally big jump in the third so the idea of taking screen shots while I was designing came into being.
You may have noticed a small band in my newer designs showing the design from start to finish in a few key segments… well, I decided to extend that many fold with my home gym exerciser released about a week ago being the first test… the results are getting there but from this experience, the next model, my Mars Rover will have all the glitches figured-out in this screen shot to animation process.

What did I learn designing this?
- Don’t move the camera around so much when designing, it screws-up the devolution video as your eye focus on the change in movement, not the change in design.
