Dimitris Haidas, Industrial and Product Designer (Greece)

Dimitris worked at several design firms before starting his own, Dhaidas which focuses on visualization and product design in Greece. Here are some key takeaways from his interview:

You have a Masters in Design of Interactive and Industrial Products and Systems as well as a degree in industrial and product design. After getting your degree, why did you go back to school to get your masters as you could have gotten additional specialty by just studying books on the topic no?

I wanted to learn more techniques in product design and i wanted to specialised in design thinking. Also I met professors with big experience in design. Talking a master is a step if you want to start later an academic career.

Συνέχισα με μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές για να μάθω επιπλέον τεχνικές στο σχεδιασμό προϊόντων αλλά και να διδαχθώ design thinking από έμπειρους ανθρώπους που έχουν υπηρετήσει το design πολλά χρόνια. Η απόκτηση ενός μεταπτυχιακού αποτελεί επίσης ένα βήμα για την αρχή ακαδημαϊκής καριέρας. Ύστερα από πολλά χρόνια μπορώ να πω πως με δικαίωσε αυτή η επιλογή μου.

For several years you worked for other companies developing their products and bringing them to market, what made you want to start your own industrial design firm? What are some of the benefits you felt right away being your own boss?

I wanted to put my knowledge and skills into my products. Its not easy.

Some benefits are that I have a lot of time and that I’m working in my office at home… but it is not always good because I am working every day or every night.

Also I don’t have a boss to make me nervous.

Έχω δουλέψει σε αρκετές εταιρίες που ασχολούνταν με το σχεδιασμό αντικειμένων και κατασκευών. Οι περισσότερες έχουν κλείσει λόγω της οικονομικής κρίσης αλλά και αυτές που αντέχουν βρίσκονται σε δύσκολη οικονομική θέση. Θεώρησα ότι μπορώ να ξεκινήσω το ελεύθερο επάγγελμα καθώς με τα χρόνια άρχισα να γίνομαι όλο και πιο έμπειρος στο σχεδιασμό αντικειμένων.

Τα θετικά που έχει το να έχεις μια δική σου επιχείρηση είναι ότι μπορείς να δουλεύεις από το γραφείο του σπιτιού σου αλλά βέβαια αυτό δεν είναι και ότι καλύτερο διότι μπορεί να εργάζεσαι και τη νύχτα αλλά και τα Σαββατοκύριακα. Ένα σημαντικό στοιχείο είναι ότι δεν έχω κάποιον πάνω από το κεφάλι μου ώστε να με πιέζει και να με αγχώνει. Προτιμώ να κανονίζω μόνος μου το χρόνο που θα αφιερώσω πάνω σε ένα project.

When you work for somebody else, finding clients generally isn’t “your problem” but this changes when you have your own business. How did you go about finding paying customers and how difficult was it especially over the past few years where Greece hasn’t been the most vibrant economy? Where do most of your clients come from?

Yea finding customers is a big problem.. when you have your company and work alone you must to find customers to be the designer and the promoter for your work..it is very difficult. I’m trying to put my projects into my website and then promote myself from internet. Internet is a big tool. Also I have an e-shop in my website. A lot of customers are from Greece. I’m trying to have not expensive products and services. The behaviour of the designers is to vision and solve local problems and needs related to economical crisis. The idea begins from the need. The need to create or modify an already existing object to make our lives easier.

Ναι η εύρεση πελατών είναι μεγάλο πρόβλημα. Όταν δουλεύεις μόνος σου πρέπει να αναζητήσεις πελάτες, να σχεδιάσεις ακόμα και να προωθήσεις το προϊόν σου. Είναι αρκετά δύσκολο. Πολλές φορές ανεβάζω σχέδιά μου στην ιστοσελίδα μου και προσπαθώ να προωθώ τη δουλειά μου μέσω internet. Το internet το θεωρώ σημαντικό εργαλείο στις μέρες μας. Επίσης διατηρώ ένα e-shop στην ιστοσελίδα μου. Οι περισσότεροι πελάτες μου είναι από Ελλάδα. Προσπαθώ οι τιμές των αντικειμένων μου και των υπηρεσιών που προσφέρω να είναι χαμηλές ώστε να τις προσαρμόσω στις δύσκολες οικονομικές συνθήκες που κυριεύουν την πατρίδα μου.

What hardware and software tools are your favorite to use to come-up and produce your designs?

I am using all the software of Autodesk (3ds max, Autocad, Inventor, Sketchbook) and sometimes Photoshop and illustrator.

Χρησιμοποιώ κυρίως προγράμματα της Autodesk (3ds max, Autocad, Inventor, Sketchbook) αλλά και πολλές φορές το Photoshop και το illustrator.

You’ve won a number of awards for your work – did this translate into helping you acquire more clients and help further grow your business? How does did you win them and how did you feel when you received them?

Yes it is true. After the awards I had many projects and my website (www.dhaidas.com) was on fire.. i was very happy when I read by email or hear by phone the good news.. I was awarded for a 3d animation and the ceremony was in the European parliament. It was a big honour for me. Also I was awarded for a furniture (wooden stool) and for a door handle.

Ναι είναι αλήθεια. Μετά τα βραβεία έγινε αρκετός ντόρος, μου ανατέθηκαν αρκετά project και η ιστοσελίδα μου (www.dhaidas.com) πήρε φωτιά. Ενιωσα μεγάλη χαρά όταν διάβαζα τα e-mail ή απαντούσα στα τηλέφωνα που μου έλεγαν ότι πήρα κάποιο βραβείο. Βραβεύτηκα για ένα 3d animation και η τελετή απονομής έγινε στο Ευρωπαϊκό κοινοβούλιο. Ήταν πολύ μεγάλη τιμή για μένα και μόνο που βρισκόμουν εκει. Επίσης έχω βραβευτεί για ένα έπιπλο (ξύλινο σκαμπό) αλλά και για ένα χερούλι πόρτας.

I really like your wooden kitchen tool, looks like the perfect CNC laser cut project as it’s easily flat-packed, made out of wood (my favorite material) and is very functional. How long did it take you to design it and have you had any success getting buyers to sell this on your behalf?

This project was for a competition but I did not make any prototype. It tooks me about 6 hours to design it. Yes i like also all the flatpacked products and technique and I love wood. I am also an assistant professor in an institute learning students how to design wooden objects (Department of Wood & Furniture Design and Technology based in Karditsa) since 2006. In my website you can find a flatpack wooden stool. I make the prototype and i want to make some changes and then i will try to find customers or companies to sell it.

Το project αυτό ήταν για ένα διαγωνισμό και δεν το προχώρησα ώστε να το κατασκευάσω. Το σχεδίασα περίπου σε 6 ώρες. Μου αρέσει πολύ η τεχνική flatpack που εφαρμόζεται σε αντικείμενα και μου αρέσει και εμένα το ξύλο ώς υλικό (Διδάσκω και στο τμήμα Σχεδιασμού και τεχνολογίας ξύλου και επίπλου από το 2006). Στην ιστοσελίδα μου μπορείτε βρείτε και ένα flatpack ξύλινο σκαμπό που σχεδίασα. Έχω κατασκευάσει το πρωτότυπο και πρέπει να κάνω κάποιες τελικές αλλαγές ώστε να τελειοποιηθεί και να φτάσει στο τελικό στάδιο παραγωγής.

Anything else you’d like to add?

This period I’m using a 3d printer to make prototypes from plastic (PLA). The print area is 20 x 20 x 20 cm. It is really fantastic and I’m trying to make innovative products with this. I suggest to all designers that they must buy one of them. They are not expensive.

Αυτήν την περίοδο χρησιμοποιώ έναν τρισδιάστατο εκτυπωτή (3d printer) και κατασκευάζω πρωτότυπα και μακέτες από πλαστικό. Η περιοχή εκτυπωσης είναι 20x20x20 εκατοστά. Είναι φανταστικό μηχάνημα και θεωρώ ότι θα έχει πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο στο μέλλον σε πολλούς τομείς. Προτείνω σε όλους τους σχεδιαστές να αγορασουν ένα τέτοιο μηχάνημα καθώς οι τιμές είναι προσιτές.
