Avengers Movie: Digital Asset Sales

I was reading through the VXF that the company Scanline dif for The Avengers movie that broke all box-office records over the weekend and realized something… all these digital assets can be 3D PRINTED! Oh yeah, the software they used for the movie (some scenes anyways) is the same I use daily here… minus the thousands of artists and super-computers rendering things full time.

Movies are now using more and more scenes where the majority of the assets are from digital origins meaning they can be easily used over and over again, in different scenes and even movies… at no cost (other than rendering). You like Hulk? Fine, stick him in the background instead of a tree in the Wizard of Oz flexing… or use his digital asset as the Wizard! I hope you get the idea.

Gone are the days where you have to WAIT for things to grow, flourish or seasons to change. It’s the dead of winter and you want people walking on the hot summer sand but you are filming in the North Pole? No problem, stick a green screen and within a few minutes, it’s reality! I know that for IronMan 2 for instance, the costume in many of the scenes is actually real, the parts were 3D printed due to the speed and customization available but those files could be easily stuck online for fans to create their own IronMan 2 outfit customized to their size and weight distribution.

So, coming your way in a few years, watch a movie, go home, print your favorite character in your favorite pose (in full color no less) and in a few hours, you got your toy! Where would you get the digital models? Hmmm
